When Destruction Leads to Creation: Navigating Relationships and Setting Boundaries

When does destruction equal creation?
When is it necessary to destroy something to pave the way for something new?
And does that change when it’s regarding relationships, be it romantic or friends?

Food becomes spoiled, and can be used to turn into compost, which helps new plants to grow. Similarly to when the Native Americans would burn land, it would not only prevent forest fires from spreading, but burnt land can not only make way for more area to plant new things, but return minerals to the earth.
People who know how to do this, do it from experience, or from the knowledge passed down by others.

But when there’s no one around with experience, or the knowledge; passed down or not, who has the responsibility to do it?

Do you just do it and hope for the best?
Or do you wait until it’s apparent you need to act, by then it also may be too late?

Doing it too hastily, or without the proper know-how, could result in unnecessary destruction, or irreparable damage.

But if you do it immediately, and it pays offโ€ฆ well, it pays off, doesn’t it? You get your pat on the back and a โ€œWell done! Good job!โ€ and some pretty good recognition for both your quick-thinking and apparent knack for something you know fuck-all about. โ€œYou’ve saved this state of America by burning this particular part of the land, making it so that when there is a forest fire, it won’t be able to spread to the next area. Not only that, but you’ve opened up a new area of land for us to farm, and the burnt area has released a whole-lot more minerals back into the soil!โ€
I’m not actually aware if the whole mineral thing is accurate, I know this information by word of mouth or fragmented memory of previous research, but it serves my analogy well.

That’s only if you do the correct thing by acting immediately despite your lack of knowledge. So, say you chicken-out and do nothing. Completely fair, right? You know absolutely nothing about preventing forest fires, or at least you’ve not been taught specifically, or you’re not part of the ‘Anti-Forest Fire Crew’ whose responsibility it is to do this.
And, you leave it. Let it go, it’s definitely not your responsibility at all. It’s the Team’s responsibility. Have they seen this issue? Do they have suspicions that this issue is indeed an issue? Do they not suspect it at all? Not your issue, it’s theirs. After all, your concerns are unimportant and unprofessional, you’re untrained, and you know nothing about the job, that is why you are not on the Team. What do you know? Why should they even listen to you?

The fire starts later, when you are out of the picture, and it spreads. The Team who knows nothing about this area, where the fire will spread, will only know about this until it’s too late. The entire forest will be set ablaze before they know, and by the time they act upon it, they’ll be doing recovery measures, not preventative or defensive measures.

So what happens when it’s human relationships?

You have a friend who is the equivalent of this fire, or risk of spread, that needs pruning.

This friend, you’ve been friends with for at least a year or thereabouts, and you’ve been through ups and downs with them. There’s been changes in behaviour due to real-life and online struggles, both to do with relationships, both real and fictional. From this point, this person has become more and more obsessive or pointing out other people’s flaws, weaknesses and downfalls; further pushing them down by heightening their progress, successes, and general good feelings.

At first, this change in attitude is not alarming, you either lack the experience or fail to see the underlying side effects of this new behaviour. This person seems ambitious, and it’s empowering, at times it seems a little too much, but you can attribute it to a healthy overdose of just how badly this person wants to succeed; you root for them.

The nature of humans, is to gossip, and despite it having bad routes, not all gossip is bad or harmful. It can, however, be an indicator when things are getting bad if we look at quality, quantity, and frequency.
The smell of smoke in the forest is not a common smell, but that doesn’t always mean that it’s danger. Depending on smell, location, and intensity of smell and sight of smoke; it could be nothing but a campfire been made to cook some food.
The same can be said for gossip, sometimes it’s just food for thought, a probing question, a warning about a specific person that would do well to be heeded, or just something of general interest. This healthy gossip is usually centralised in a specific area that the receiver has interest in, or around a person of note, interest or can prove a danger to the listener.

I fucking love A.I. sometimes. Look at this woman’s forehead.

When the gossip starts to become about everyone and everything, it should start to become a little more concerning, especially if everything is negative. โ€œHey, I caught this guy getting into trouble for this, guys, look, look, I have the screenshots.โ€ Especially if this ‘guy’ means nothing to you, and the main interest of the friend is just to garner shock or drama just for the fun of it, or for more attention. Essentially reducing themselves to no better than a YouTube Creator with clickbait titles/thumbnails to draw attention.

So, you have yourself a really gossip-y friend who finds any excuse to put others down in your eyes, who is super ambitious, and lightly gloats about any successes or good days they have. You’ve witnessed red flags, but is there anything you can do here? Do you need to do anything here? Both inexperience and indecision will more than likely lead to nothing being done, that, or your judgement over the situation will deem that it’s โ€œjust not that big of a dealโ€.

The problem is, is that gossip is usually something that the source of the gossip, the subject, would usually prefer that the information remained in their close circle. This person, or people, would be blissfully unaware they were being talked about to such an extent. When this information, however, not only has someone being gossiped about in a damaging manner but is also a result of a company that has their employees swear not to share this information, it becomes a lot more concerning. Of course, at first, this information can be entertaining; scandal is one of the bestsellers, but at what part is it your responsibility to either halt your friend’s unethical behaviour? Is it your place? Do you have the know-how to identify the issues before or as they arise, or do you have the knowledge to stop the behaviour when it reaches dangerous levels? Or, will you have to just sweep up the ashes of a fire that could’ve been prevented?

You have the unfortunate dilemma of a friend of yours, doing something wrong, in an unappealing mindset, and is quite emotionally fragile as well. Leaving it to simmer down may have the desired result, but could also have the complete opposite; almost showing that behaviour acceptance.
You have maybe spoken to this friend about their behaviour, and they’ve either become apologetic (yet continue the behaviour) or become strongly defensive, or both. You let it simmer time and time over, hoping each time that they give you an โ€œit’s just a bad dayโ€ or โ€œfamily issues are getting to meโ€ or โ€œwork is really fucking me overโ€, to a point where one of you has to say something. At first, it’s caring, you love this friend, and you want them to get better on their own; a gentle little handhold or a gentle little shove should get them in the correct direction. It happens again, and you realise that it’s not the best approach, so you try to be a bit more stern and it seems to work. They appear to be self-reflecting a lot more and – ahโ€ฆ shitโ€ฆ They’re back to their old ways immediately.

It takes not you, but someone else, a new friend who is under less influence of your friend, to come out and put their foot down. But as said before, it’s too late. Due to it not being you, the best friend, and someone that this friend would now see as an interloper; it has been interpreted as an insult. The fire has been put out, but there’s been a lot of unseen damage.
This person is now no longer talking to you, only talking to you if they feel like they have to, and gives of a reluctant vibe or tone in every instance of conversation. No verbal or text conversation ends well, most don’t even end โ€œokayโ€.

It’s safe to say that despite your efforts, you acted too late; the damage has been done.
Despite your effort to quench the fire when you saw it, it had already reached terminal velocity, or whatever you’d call that in forest fire terms. You saved the surrounding space with the help of your friends, but it cost you a few burns, maybe a few bad ones, and even some property damage. It’ll scar, and you’ll have to replace what you lost, but the damage to what was already done is irreparable.
That’s where I’m currently at just now.
Picking up the pieces, looking around for things that may not be too damaged, and currently taking care of myself and making sure others are alright.

In human relationships, intervening early can prevent a lot of harm. If gossip becomes damaging or breaches confidences, it’s crucial to address it. It may be uncomfortable, but letting it simmer can lead to worse outcomes.

This scenario can strain your friendship, leaving you to pick up the pieces and deal with the aftermath. The lesson here is to recognize and act on the signs early. Addressing issues in a timely manner, even if uncomfortable, can prevent larger problems later on.

There will ALWAYS be times when acting early is the wrong thing, but at this point; you can say you tried at least.

It’s too late for me to use this now, for my situation, but here is some good advice I found on this subject while writing this piece.

Communicate Early and Honestly: Address concerns as soon as they arise. Honest communication can prevent misunderstandings and escalation.
Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries to prevent negative behaviour from affecting your relationship.
Seek Support: If you’re unsure how to handle the situation, seek advice from trusted friends or professionals.
Focus on Solutions: Instead of just pointing out concerns, work with your friend to find constructive solutions.
Be Compassionate: Understand that your friend may be going through their struggles. Approach the situation with empathy.

However, if none of this is being heeded, or working in your favour; remember to prioritise your mental health. Accept your limits not only on how much you can control the situation, but how much you can control yourself and your general โ€œbullshit meterโ€ limit of just how much you can take.

In Conclusion

Managing difficult relationships requires recognizing and responding to early warning signs. Setting boundaries, seeking support and focusing on solutions are key strategies. When these efforts don’t work, it’s important to protect your mental health. It may be necessary to distance yourself or end the relationship if boundaries are crossed or your friend is unresponsive. Relationships that support and uplift you are what you deserve. By taking proactive steps and prioritizing your mental health, you can manage relationship issues effectively and prevent long-term harm.

Realms of Tanerila

Introduction

Damien rushed out the door of his house half dressed, he was late. Pulling on his cotton shirt and fastening his labour britches, he spun round and slammed the door behind him. Picking up his makeshift suitcase with his various blacksmithing tools poking out at either side as he turned, a myriad of sleeves and trouser legs threatening to burst out, almost leaking out of the unfastened openings in.
Today was the day that he was to leave this island, the day that, finally, he would leave everything behind. He would leave behind his job, his apprentice, his only friend and his house, and most likely quite a lot of his clothes too.

Anywhere was better than here.

Damien hurried down the pathway towards the town with his shoes half on, not to mention also still being distracted by even the slightest abnormality along the way, despite his rush.

He had spent too long here since his parents died, he shouldโ€™ve moved ages ago. Too many good memories that resonated around the place, those of which just turned sad and grey as he remembered the loss of his parents.

Bustling down the track into the town, Damien panicked about being late and missing a ship could mean that he would never get to see what it was like on the mainland. Surely, it would be better than the miserable years he spent on the island alone. It just had to be. He had become a blacksmithing apprentice after his Dad lost his job due to losing his leg to cellulitis after being bitten by a wild bear. He worked as an apprentice making swords and armour for the massing army which governed the island until he was old enough to join the army at 14. During his time in the royal defence at the border of where the two kingdoms meet, he received news that both parents had died in a fatal accident upon returning from a market trip.

Speeding to the docks, he sees the shipโ€™s steward waiting outside the boat for him. He was maybe the only true friend that Damien had, and he was leaving him behind too. After coming back from the war, Damien automatically became the townโ€™s blacksmith, as his tutor had passed away during the years that he was on the front. With the demand for steel low after the war had been fought, Damien ultimately had no work but crafting spare shovels and repairing things, perhaps the odd bit of jewellery. As expected, he fell onto hard times and his friend was always there to dig him out of his debts, more times than once.

He gave his friend his last goodbyeโ€™s and promised him that he would come back and pay off his debt once he had found his true calling on the mainland. He boarded the ship and waved goodbye rather woefully as he sat upon a nearby rusted barrel overlooking the bow of the ship.

After some time, the ship creaked its way out into the middle of the sea, the island was a fair distance by now but not enough so that it was impossible to swim to. Damien was in a world of his own, imagining what was waiting for him when they docked on the mainland. Fresh fruit, market stallsโ€ฆ. They had them here, of course, but they werenโ€™t in abundance, and of course, not really being back for long and being so poor and underpaid, he couldnโ€™t really afford to leave his shop and go travelling.

Hours passed, and he found himself waking from a dream-filled daydream by an unusual sight. A bright purple glow came from the far side of the deck, it being nighttime, the glow was even more eerie as it loomed on the deck and grew and swayed with the rocking of the ship. Damien peered through the darkness, making out a distinct 4 silhouettes, symbols on their hands pulsating in rhythm to their chanting.

Before any dark incantation could happen, a group of the royal guard burst out from the captainโ€™s cabin and made straight for the silhouettes, brandishing their swords with violent intent. Before Damien could react, one of the royal guards noticed him and charged over only to deal a vigorous blow to the front of Damien’s head using the butt of the sword, rendering him unconscious.

The Fall of Flannigan Fort

Realms of Tanerila is a Choose Your Own Adventure story written 5 years ago by myself for my HNC Games Development course. I started wellโ€ฆ then I wrote the rest in a couple of hours at 4am because the deadline was too long, and I forgot about it.

Abscond – ย XiNFiNiTY Games + Asset Flipping

Another one of these games that I do not remember purchasing. However, Steam remembers it as September the 30th of 2019, and I will take its word for it.
But, this is also another one of these games I will tell you to steer clear of, and this time it’s not because the game is bad.

So, here I was, probably on a shady website or browsing Fanatical Bundles. If I’d seen this game on its lonesome, outside a bundle, I would not have bought it. It came in the bundle regardless, and as part of my โ€œI need to get through my massive backlog of gamesโ€ effort on Twitch, I played it to give it a go.

About this time I was thinking, โ€œWow, this game cost ยฃ0.99, and it’s not bad.โ€

I’m zipping about in this simple, and minimalistic, but challenging, nonetheless, game, and it’s pretty damn good.
Still not groundbreaking or amazing, but nothing like the other shovelware on Steam which they let pass through these days.

Low and behold, I don’t need to look very far, and I find that this game is an asset flip, complete and utter plagiarism. The developer of this game is claiming this game as his own when the rightful maker made this available on Unity.

Here is the Unity: https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/templates/tutorials/avoid-82067
Here is their website: http://thatgamesguy.co.uk/

There are pros and there are cons, but Abscond is not this developer’s game. So, there are only cons here, which are:

โ€œDev does not know how to make a gameโ€ / โ€œDev is too lazy to make a game by themselves.โ€

So, what do we do now?
I’m downright refusing to acknowledge the โ€œdeveloperโ€ as the creator of this game, and left with nothing to gripe about.

Things like this do leave me to be curious, however.
If a โ€œdeveloperโ€ on Steam, is willing to get free assets from Unity, not alter the game in ANY manor and attempt to sell it passing it off as their ownโ€ฆ will they benefit?

As it stands, Steam charges the developer $100 per game put through the Steam Direct program, meaning that as soon as a developer puts it up, they are $100 down. Unless you have lots of expendable cash, it’s not money you’d get rid of without being completely certain that what you’re doing is worth it/profitable.

So, the developer, XiNFiNiTY Games, takes a free asset bundle and sells it on Steam without further modification.
โ€” $100.
If you’re a nerd like me and have Augmented Steam and SteamDB browser extensions, you will be given some useful information, but I’ll touch on that in a second.
Looking at the initial data of the game that the regular Steam user gets, you can see that the game only has 9 reviews despite it being โ€œreleasedโ€ in December 2017. You’d possibly think to yourself, โ€œFuck, maybe it’s just because it’s an endless, simplistic little arcade game that’s not had a ton of spotlight.โ€
Scrolling further down, you’ll see the usual thing of there being actually more than 9 reviews, there actually being 24, which is still not a great deal despite the game being released for 5 years.

The bigger majority of these reviews being negative, calling towards the simplicity of the game, low effort and not being worth the money being asked of it.
A couple of others, including myself, using these points others had made along with the fact that the game is an asset flip to point out why it was so ridiculous that it was paid for.

24 is still a small number, but thanks to my add-ons, you get a rough estimate of how many people actually own this game.

Now, as you can probably tell already by looking at the picture. 20k to 50k is not really that much of an โ€œaccurate numberโ€, nor is it really all that accurate at all. It’s quite the ballpark range.

Okayโ€ฆ So let’s outsource this a bit, and try a different thing to guess how many people own this game.

Ohโ€ฆ

So, we have the same numbers from SteamSpy, but some huge numbers from PlayTracker. And honestly, on first viewing of that number it seemed unreal and did not want it to be accurate.
But concerning the number of reviews, and also looking at that third number (actually the first in the set, but the third that I mentioned), it looks a lot more realistic.

Therefore, on some basic maths, entirely ignoring a few factors such as Steam sales, discounts, and devs giving their keys away to bundle sites:
If SteamSpy’s upper estimate is correct, and 50k copies have been sold, then you’d be right to assume that they’ve pocketed $44,900. Which would be absolutely ridiculous.

Even going by the โ€œOwners By Reviewsโ€ lower estimate it would still mean that the โ€œdeveloperโ€ made a net profit of $1340, which is still disturbing considering that this is not even their content.

So, looking a bit further into this game, on various blogs, I happened upon a very useful site, or maybe I found it useful as it provided me the information I wanted to see. (Rather than the news I wanted to hear).

A site known as Game-Stats that has a lot of information on games had something more in mind of what would’ve been earned by the so-called developer. Fair enough though, despite being a lot more realistic and what I’d had in mind, it was still unfortunately above the $100 they had to pay to release โ€œtheirโ€ game.
Meaning, at the end of this (if this website’s more realistic looking evaluation of the revenue is correct) they still gained $70 from essentially stealing someone else’s work and slapping a different name on it.

Meaning, if anyone wants to almost double their money, just steal someone’s game and slap your name on it and pop it on Steam, they won’t do anything about it. (obvious sarcasm)

Hi, I’m not finished yet.
So, this โ€œdeveloperโ€ can yoink practically an asset pack from Unity, not change anything about it and claim it as their own, gaining almost double their money back.

What if this is not the only time they’ve done this?
Or at least, that’s a question that I start to ask myself because I’m a weird one like that and apparently have too much spare time, despite never seeming to have any at all.

XiNFiNiTY Games have 22 games to their name, 6 of which being DLC (Downloadable Content), so we can bring that number down to 16. One of the first-ever games, of which being โ€œInfinity Wings โ€“ Scout & Gruntโ€ actually gathered enough reviews from people to generate an average audience score, which is not a good one.
What the more early games of XiN have in common is that they’re not the sole publisher of the game, and that OtakuMaker SARL are the ones publishing instead. These games also still not getting great receptions, but looking and seeming to be more fully fledged games than the Abscond rip-off.

The first one that we actually take a look at is another game with a very similar thumbnail to Abscond (in fact, they all are very similar looking in terms of simplicity).
Spinning Around is a basic game where you have to fly your Spaceship into the correct colour, while the colour position that you have to fly through changes.
You’ve all seen someone playing a mobile game with this concept.
This is another blatant rip-off, another asset bundle ripped from the Unity Asset store, a different title slapped onto it and published on steam as their own content.
What is the net profit that site predicts this time? $320.

Okay, let’s try another one. Infinity Trip.
Another unity asset flip, as the real developers can be seen right here.
How much is their estimated return? $56.
Okay, thank goodness, nearly everyone reviewing this one knew that it was an asset flip immediately. Must be a more popular asset bundle than the rest.

  • Trigonometry? Probably Fake. Net Revenue $340.
  • Jump! Jump! Jump!? Likely also fake. Net Revenue $56.
  • Infinity Escape? 100% Stolen. Net Revenue $110.
  • Stellar Warrior? Phone-game esque, so most likely also stolen. Net Revenue $0 (Seems improbable, yet there are no good reviews at all about this game).
  • Lozenge. Definitely fake. Net Revenue $94.
  • Dialing? Would not put it past them to steal this, but can’t find an original. Net Rev $18.
  • Genius Calculator? It is apparently an asset flip, but I can’t find the source. Net Rev $260
  • Outline? An obvious offender. Net Rev $130.
  • Cubic Color? More than likely. (Can’t find original source). Net Rev $37.
  • Color Circle? No evidence as far as I can see, but it looks exactly like what they’d usually steal. Net Rev $75.
*All โ€œNet Revenueโ€ are estimates made by the Game-Stats website.

So, from the asset flipping, player scamming side of things, we have 13 games that have possibly been attained from the unity asset store. All of which have been turned around, had a new name slapped on top of the old one and put on Steam to be sold as โ€œtheirโ€ game.

13 x $100 = $1300
So, the devs have spent this much putting the games on Steam, but did they get back what they spent?
$75 + $37 + $130 + $260 + $18 + $94 + $0 + $110 + $56 + $340 + $56 + $320 + $170
When you look at it, there are plenty of small numbers that are below the $100 threshold, but a few big numbers.
The gamble was really risky, as not a lot of their flips generated a profit, but the ones that did generate a profit only did so marginally in comparison to indie games that have any real effort.

Estimated Net Revenue for all (possible) asset flip games being $1,666. (*Gasp* 666)
Provided they paid for each game to be put on Steam, they presumably made a $366 profit, assuming the website is more accurate than the others.
This is not amazing, and taking a close look at their profits from each game, if Trigonometry hadn’t done as good as most of the others, they would not have as much of a profit as they do now.

Color Circle

But realistically speaking, however, what if this hadn’t stopped in 2018 and this developer kept selling asset flips?
Also bringing to attention, these games are still live on the Steam store, waiting to be bought. This โ€œdeveloperโ€ can still obtain money right now from any unsuspecting buyer.
This slow gain of $366 has happened over the course of five years, acting like an offshore bank account or investing in a really slow-moving stock, but it’s still there.

You can probably guess my opinion on the matter. I find it morally unethical, and completely condemn this as while it’s still apparently legal, it’s harmful to the image of โ€œindieโ€.
Not only that, but it damages the reputation and the credibility in the eyes of players towards other games that use bought assets for their games, such as PUBG.
Many indie game devs either do not have the skill, time, or the know-how to pursue making their own assets. Buying these asset bundles and game templates are what gives these developers a head start and a clear direction of where to improve from, or what to use, or how to use what they have.
Unlike these innocent game devs who use these assets as intended, XiNFiNiTY take templates as they are, change nothing, and slap their name on it.

Call this whatever legal term you wish, forgery, plagiarism, theft.
At the end of the day, it’s certainly a scam. You can get the tools to make these games for free, you get the templates for free (sometimes paid, but a lot XiNFiNiTY took were free or cheap), and โ€œmakeโ€ exactly what XiNFiNiTY copy and pasted yourself.

If you come across any games by XiNFiNiTY Games, then please do not add to their pool of money that should’ve been distributed to the real developers.
There are many other better indie developers, and there are many other better indie developers that actually have done the work they are advertising.

The amount of time and research put into this topic could’ve been a lot more, and I would’ve gone further into this if I had the energy. However, this was made a lot quicker due to two characters on Steam. The first being Zaxtor99 TTV, whose review first alerted me to such a thing as an asset flip. I’d always suspected as such, but after playing Abscond and then being shown where it originally came from, I was gobsmacked that someone would actually do this. Secondly, to the person behind the curator called Sturgeon’s Law, Obey the Fist!, who almost had every link to all the assets that were stolen.
I’ve also now read a whole Wikipedia article on โ€œAsset-Flipsโ€ and an article/interview with Bennett Foddy and am a little asset-flipped out now.

Edit: I’ve been made vaguely aware that it’s somehow possible for developers to cheat the $100 entry fee for releasing a game on Steam by dropping more than one game at a time (or something). I’m not fully versed in this knowledge and can’t find any info on it at the moment. But it does, however, change a lot of the โ€œpredicted profitโ€ if these โ€œdevelopersโ€ managed to do this too, I, however, will probably look at this another time.
